Try Dave Thomas' version.  I get an answer in 12 seconds (6 seconds
with sort_bytes):

% time ./dt.rb
Found: indeterminations
real    0m6.043s
user    0m5.474s
sys     0m0.164s

that's on a somewhat busy pentium 550mhz.
