Both will set ruby_verbose: case 'v': if (verbose) { s++; goto reswitch; } ruby_show_version(); verbose = 1; case 'w': ruby_verbose = Qtrue; s++; goto reswitch; But the former will not allow you to redirect input to the ruby interpreter: if (!e_script && argc == 0) { /* no more args */ if (verbose) exit(0); script = "-"; } I suppose this is so that you can type ruby -v and get the version.
