Personally I use 'joe'. It's not an IDE, it's just an editor, but it is small, extremely fast, and is non-modal. That is: when you type 'x', a letter 'x' appears in your document. This may be a novel concept for some. It also has simple default keybindings (not ctrl-this-meta-that), and on-screen help in case you forget the less frequently used ones.
