I've installed Ruby 1.9 via MacPorts (MacBook Pro and 10.5.6), and it runs ok:

%  ruby1.9 -v
ruby 1.9.1p0 (2009-01-30 revision 21907) [i386-darwin9]
%  ruby1.9 -e "puts 'hello world'"
hello world
