CVS commit emails

From: Martin Man <Martin.Man@...>
Date: 2002-02-04 18:51:23 UTC
List: ruby-talk #33093
hi all,
Recently I've subscribed myself to the ruby-cvs mailing list to see
what's happening and over the weeks I'm finding the commit emails quite boring
(nothing personal, just plain CVS setup I think). I happen to be an Apache
commiter as well and we're using some hand made CVS log scripts that do at
least following...

1) they send only one email for one commit (not one for each set of modified
files in different directories), so that one commit email means one chunk of
related changes.

2) they attach context diffs of all changes to the bottom of email so that one
can immediately see what has happened with the sources.

This proved to be a very convenient method of tracking the project
progress and staying up to date without the need to walk through sources. It
also helps to keep eye on possible source bugs, etc...

I'm offering my help to set up similar logging emails for ruby cvs,
it might help, especially in situations where cvs log message is not longer
than 20 characters (90% of log messages I've seen in ruby-cvs till now :-)))

let me know if you're interested,

P.S. The URLs pointing to the web CVS interface that are included in commit
emails nowadays are nice too, but they do not provide diffs, nor they are
local (e.g., useless without connectivity)

P.P.S. I'm attaching one rather simplier commit email from
xml-cocoon2-cvs so that you hopefully see what I'm talking about...
