You are supposed to be able to do this:

$OUTPUT_RECORD_SEPARATOR = "apple"

f = File.open("data.txt", "w")
f.write "hello world"
f.write "goodbye"
f.close()

but the output I get in data.txt is:

hello worldgoodbye
