Well, I really shouldn't be replying to my own emails...but
I think the problem is that we have a program named dot on
our system. When 'dot -V' is run from the command line I get:

 dot version uwin98 (01-26-98)

and the program stops and waits on input from the user.
Where can I found a download of dot? I did not
see it in the RAA.
