Subject: Array.last Weirdness

I'd expect the following code: 

   array = ["hello"]
   array.last += " world"
   puts array

to print "hello world", but instead I get errors like "undefined method
`last=' for ["hello"]:Array (NameError)". This doesn't seem too good...
