While I agree with many of the points here, let me also say that I'd still prefer a "core ruby" which was just the plain-old command-line scripting support. Then have a separate package which adds the objects for GUI support (whatever that would be). I'm trying to get ruby up on a number of different platforms, and I'd like to get that minimal set up and running without having to deal with all the extra challenges of the gui layer.
