SWT was made by OTI. The same people who made the cross-platform 
CommonWidgets classes for VisualAge Smalltalk. They have the OSWidget 
class level, and then on top the CommonWidget classes.
Then, depending on the system you want to run, the OSWidgets for that 
system are loaded. The CommonWidgets stay the same. You always use the 
CommonWidgets.

So I'd say that the people who got THIS right, most certainly knew what 
they were doing when they made SWT.
