i just tried the ff now eg, and it works

worksheet.Range('a1')['Value']
#=> 1.0
worksheet.Range('a1:b4')['Value']
#=> [[1.0, "this"], [2.0, "is"], [3.0, "a"], [4.0, "test"]]
