Subject: $_ as default parameter for a function

I'd like the fragment below to produce "blah blah", but it doesn't

def aFunc(param = $_)
  puts param
end

$_ = "blah blah"
aFunc


How do I write a function that uses the value of $_ in the calling
scope, so I can get the same behaviour as the many Kernel methods.
