For now I've solved by just p'opening YACAS and letting it perform the reduction. It's production code and I needed it up and working quickly. I'd like to end up with a pure Ruby solution, though, and I've downloaded mupad's lib and will have a look at the others as well. Thanks a lot to you, Robert and Michel for the pointers. Massimiliano
