 Well, in ruby module are used for mixin.

 A little example, with

   module M1; end
   module M2; end
   class A < B
      include M1
      extend M2
   end

 You'll have something like this

       (A) ---- [M2] ---> (B)
        ^                  ^
        |                  |
        |                  |
        |                  |
        A  ---- [M1] --->  B

 (A) is the metaclass of A
 (B) is the metaclass of B
 [M1], [M2] are included classes which make reference to the methods and
 variables of M1 and M2 

 This mean that if you want to add methods to the metaclass with a module,
 you must define it as method (and not singleton methods) in the module and
 you must use extend
