The lambda symbol was no longer required in ANSI CL since functions are not represented internally as lists anymore, so they could have decided to allow ((x) (+ x 1)) as easily as (lambda (x) (+ x 1)). But it was kept for readability and tradition. As a bonus the symbol-function of the lambda symbol is set to a macro that will reorganize (lambda (x) (+ x 1)) to #'(lambda (x) (+ x 1)) for you.
