maybe a 2D game of life would be a possibility. I remember one that ran on 
a CP/M terminal.  You would set it up by typing a series of x's across the 
command line, everywhere there was an 'x' would  form an initial cell. Of 
course you were limited to
80 across.  Then you would run it, and each generation would form a new 
text line.

It may sound simple, but it looked really cool. And it
could get you started immediately.

BTW, who are the 3 amigos?
