Some enterprises, in fact, run on exactly that kind of database -- Google's BigTable, for example, isn't far off. In practice, it's a superset of the functionality and scalability of a modern SQL database, only less statically typed and probably slower on a single machine. Again: There are cases where it matters that SQL is faster on a single machine. I just think that most of the cases where SQL is used today don't fit that at all.
