Subject: some problems with popen3

1) I need to know the pid of the child process, so I can kill it later.

2) If the executable provided does not exist, then I see no error
messages, and trying to read from the pipe does not give me an error
(rather, I just get a blank line).

Are these inherent problems with popen3 or can they be solved with a
patch?
