It's not a good idea to use irb to answer these kinds of questions,  
since it loads a bunch of code:

$ ruby -ve 'p Date'
ruby 1.8.6 (2008-08-11 patchlevel 287) [i686-darwin9.4.0]
-e:1: uninitialized constant Date (NameError)
