Hmm, tried it here as well:

             total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:        639320     318556     320764          0        352      67248
-/+ buffers/cache:     250956     388364
Swap:       999992      22160     977832

on a dual 500 g4 system running linux, peak memory usage was at about
300M, and it completed in 1:02...

after reading the thread, it sounds more like a cygwin problem...
