I just finished porting my twofish-py encryption module to Ruby. In
the process, I chopped out all except ECB and CFB-128 modes, and
converted it to use Rijndael rather than Twofish (thus it is aes-rb
rather than twofish-rb). This is a pure "C" module that runs much
faster than a pure Ruby version -- the CFB-128 routine within is the
exact same as is used in my aescrypt stand-alone "C" program (
http://aescrypt.sourceforge.net ) and I've benchmarked that at over
100 megabytes per second. Ruby overhead slows that down (specifically,
speed of malloc for encrypted blocks), but it should still be
significantly faster than a pure Ruby version.

Anybody within the United States or Canada who is interested in a
copy, please let me know via EMAIL and I'll mail it to you as an
attachment (it is a 50K tarball, most of which is the source code for
the S-boxes for Rijndael). I will submit it to the Bureau of Export
Administration on Monday and hopefully be able to include it at
http://aescrypt.sourceforge.net for download at that time (I cannot, alas,
do so at the moment without letting the BXA know).

Note: This is export-controlled encryption software. Export of any
program that uses it requires an export license, the BXA explained to
me when I submitted aescrypt to them. See http://www.crypto.com for more
info about export licensing (he has a nice little widget there for
publicizing it to the BXA). 

The primary use of this module, BTW, is if you want to encrypt data
being passed around via drb (Distributed Ruby) without all the overhead
and hassle of OpenSSL.
