I'm new to Ruby myself and have also trudged through OO implementations in C++, Java, Perl, and Python (chronologically). Ruby is definitely my first choice for any OO application, and is preferable to Python for many non-OO applications. Since one of the goals of OO is to make it possible to treat an instance of a user's class as if it were a built-in, Ruby comes closer to achieving this dream than I thought was possible. I was also pleased to note it's treatment of classes and variables was similar to Smalltalk's. I decline to comment, however, on Ruby's destiny. Industry preferences (outside of Redmond) often seem to be based less on Good and Evil/Right and Wrong, and more on industry whim. IOW, I have no idea what programmers will opt to use 5-10 years from now, nor do I claim to know how to predict this. ;) my 3 cents, =) Tim Hammerquist -- Obviously I was either onto something, or on something. -- Larry Wall on the creation of Perl
