You're working waaaaay too hard :-) Let Ruby do the heavy lifting.

end

r = Reservoir.new
p r.numberize("david")
p r.numberize(1234)    # extra functionality :-)

The inclusion of numberizing numbers may or may not be desired, but if
not, it should be pretty easy to get rid of.
