just convert it to string and you'll get pleasant surprise :)

irb(main):006:0> sd_ticket_end_date.to_s
=> "2008-07-14"

if you want more fancy, you can use #strftime

irb(main):007:0> sd_ticket_end_date.strftime "Date is %Y-%m-%d"
=> "Date is 2008-07-14"

just use the formatting as documented in time#strftime,

        t = Time.now
        t.strftime("Printed on %m/%d/%Y")   #=> "Printed on 04/09/2003"
        t.strftime("at %I:%M%p")            #=> "at 08:56AM"
