Basically, Ed is spot on with this.
While there are some cases where more hardware is a more practical  
solution than more programmers, good programming will rule the day  
most of the time. (microsoft is the exception that comes to mind  
most...)

While there are lots of things that "work", sensible software design  
decisions will always be better decisions.

Think about systems engineers... they're almost always going to choose  
software performance.
