YES!  I agree wholeheartedly with this last sentiment.  Let's apply our 
energies to producing new modules and projects which are not obfuscated 
;-)

To that end, perhaps what we need is a Ruby Modules contest?
We could have the Ruby Module-of-the-month contest or something like that 
where we have nominations for the best new module or project and then have 
a vote on RubyGarden.  Perhaps (dreaming here:) we could even get one of 
the publishers of the various Ruby books to kick in prizes (books)?
