Subject: Gem configuration options

How do you pass configuration options to extconf.rb when installing a gem?
Specifically I'd like to configure ruby-gd.

$ gem install ruby-gd 
 ??something?? --with-freetype --with-ttf --with-jpeg --enable-gd2_0
