Put this in your .irbrc and play around a little:

require 'yaml'

class IRB::Irb
   def output_value
     if @context.inspect?
       printf @context.return_format, @context.last_value.to_yaml
     else
       printf @context.return_format, @context.last_value
     end
   end
end
