And you can replace the zlib library with another build. It's homepage should be a starting point: http://www.zlib.net/ Alternatively, you could extract the gem with 7Zip, WinRAR or any other packaging program that understand tar and gzip. You'll have to install it somewhat manually, though (dropping it into a directory in path_to_ruby\lib\ruby\gems\1.8\gems that is named similar to the other gems there).
