OK - got it myself:

changed the code to the following lines

response = manager.get_value([oid_for_established_ipsec_tunnels])
  #response.each_varbind {|vb| puts vb.value}
  #gathered_established_tunnels = response.each_varbind {|vb| puts 
vb.value}
  gathered_established_tunnels = response.to_s
