You sure can.  Here's an example:

   object = "whatever"

   # this code saves an object
   File.open("path/to/file", "w") { |file| Marshal.dump(object, file) }

   # this code loads the object back
   object = File.open("path/to/file") { |file| Marshal.load(file) }
