TIFF is a bit hairy so it's pretty hard to do this in a one-liner.
Try EXIF Reader[1];

$ sudo gem install exifr
..
$ irb -rubygems
>> require 'exifr'
=> true
>> EXIFR::TIFF.new('some_image.tif').width
=> 269
