From: george.marrows@... Date: 2001-12-20T00:49:29+09:00 Subject: [ruby-talk:28953] ANN: ByteCodeRuby 0.0.1 Just in time for Christmas, here's another bit of Ruby virtual machine hackery. This one's (eventually) intended to let Matz's standard Ruby interpreter run off bytecodes rather than parse trees. You can get it at: http://sourceforge.net/projects/rubyvm Many thanks to Robert Feldt for help and encouragement at very short notice. See below for the readme. Have fun! -- George (long time ruby-talk lurker) ======================= = ByteCodeRuby = = version 0.0.1 = ======================= Release date: 2001-12-19 Available from: http://sourceforge.net/projects/rubyvm Author: George Marrows, triptych@ntlworld.com What is it? ----------- The very, very, very beginnings of a bytecode interpreter for Ruby. It consists of a (minor) patch to Ruby 1.6.5's eval.c and node.h, a C extension and some Ruby code. There's no compiler from Ruby to bytecode, so you have to be willing to write some VM assembler, but there are facilities to do this easily from Ruby. All you can do at the moment is create new methods, access locals and the stack, do some control flow and call methods implemented in C, but you can implement some non-trivial stuff with that (well, if you're willing to call factorials non-trivial!). Why? ---- Curiosity mostly. Installation? ------------- 1. unpack tarball (if you haven't already) 2. copy patch-1.6.5 to your Ruby 1.6.5 build area (ie parallel to eval.c etc) 3. cd into that directory 4. patch
