One of the cooler refactoring tools possible in an IDE is to take a segment of code and turn it into a method. Simple implementations just physically move the code and put in place holders for arguments but a more complete implementation can examine the segment for those variables that need to be passed into and returned from the method and place these in the argument list and return value. The inverse, expanding a method, is simpler. Extra points for examining the rest of the project for identical segments (at a parse tree level, ignoring variable names and comments etc.) and offering to replace these other occurrences. Neil
