I've tried this in irb:

require 'yaml'

foo = "foo\nbar\nbaz"
y = YAML::dump(foo)
#=> "--- |-\nfoo\nbar\nbaz\n"
foz = YAML::load(y)
foo == foz #=> true

Not sure if that's what you meant.
