From: Curt Hibbs Date: 2001-12-18T15:53:22+09:00 Subject: [ruby-talk:28849] [Announce] RIDE (Ruby IDE) and FreeRIDE merge -- a call for ideas and help My Ruby IDE project (RIDE) is merging with Rich Kilmer's FreeRIDE project. While we have been merely discussing the pros and cons of using Eclipse as a basis of a Ruby IDE vs. a pure Ruby implementation, Rich has been quietly coding a real, live pure-ruby IDE based on a ruby wrapping of the Scintilla code editing component. We will be officially using the name FreeRIDE for this project, and we invite you to post your comments, ideas, desires, etc. concerning what features a Ruby IDE should have. We have created a Wiki page on Ruby Garden for this purpose: http://www.rubygarden.org/ruby?FreeRIDE We have project space set up at Savannah for FreeRIDE (http://savannah.gnu.org/projects/ride) but it doesn't yet contain anything. And there is also an entry in RAA (http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/raa-list.rhtml?name=FreeRIDE), that currently just points you to the Wiki page. We want this to be a Ruby community effort, and we want the FreeRIDE to serve the real needs of the Ruby developer. Feel free to include any ideas you have -- even the far-out ones. Later on we will sort, prioritize, and publish an expected feature set for the first major release. Rich's current FreeRIDE implementation uses SWin/VRuby and is, therefore, windows-specific. Initial FreeRIDE development will probably continue with this. However, there is a project under way for integrating Scintilla with FOX & FXRuby, and as soon as this is available we will convert over and become multi-platform. Finally, if you are interested in working on this project, please let us know. We will need developers, testers, and people willing to write documentation and online help. Obviously, we need developers first. At the time of this announcement, the following people have signed on as project developers: Hal Fulton (mailto:hal9000@hypermetrics.com) Curt Hibbs (mailto:curt@hibbs.com) Rich Kilmer (mailto:rich@infoether.com) This is your chance to get the features that you want included.
