Ok, I follow all that now.  Thanks for the clarification!

However, there's still one question I have.  Why is this:

    respond_to do |format|
      format.html # index.html.erb
      format.xml  { render :xml => @posts }
    end

Any better than this:

    responder = Responder.new(self)
    responder.html
    responder.xml { self.render( :xml => @posts) }
    responder.respond

As best I can tell the accomplish the very same thing...?
