Something like this?
irb(main):001:0> "frabelious" =~ /a.*?e.*?i.*?o.*?u/
=> 2
irb(main):002:0> "frabeelious" =~ /a.*?e.*?i.*?o.*?u/
=> 2
irb(main):003:0> "friaeelaous" =~ /a.*?e.*?i.*?o.*?u/
=> nil
