It was a combination of different things: (a) I changed to the "stable snapshot" 1.6.6 at ftp://ftp.ruby-lang.org/pub/ruby/stable-snapshot.tar.gz (b) I applied additionally the patch suggested by "ts" in this thread (a) was responsible for about 180kB/s memory leak, (b) was responsible for 20kB/s. Now I have to integrate 1.6.6. into my environment ... still a lot of work. Thanks again, Jens P.S.: Is there any place in the ruby garden, where I can see those changes without having to make a diff over all the code? Or is there too many changes to make such a list feasible? A simple diff would still leave me wondering what the changes will bring.
