Subject: [ruby-talk:28735] Iowa installation experience

Just a report on my experience getting Iowa-0.14a installed with

  $ ruby -v
  ruby 1.6.5 (2001-09-19) [i686-linux]

Compilation warning:

  $ make
  /usr/sbin/apxs -c    mod_iowa.c
  gcc -DLINUX=22 -DEAPI -DEAPI_MM -O2 -march=i386 -mcpu=i686 -fPIC -DEAPI_MM_CORE_PATH=/var/run/httpd.mm -fpic -DSHARED_MODULE -I/usr/include/apache  -c mod_iowa.c
  mod_iowa.c: In function `iowa_handler':
  mod_iowa.c:79: warning: passing arg 2 of `connect' from incompatible pointer type
  gcc -shared -o mod_iowa.so mod_iowa.o

"sudo make install" added lines to my httpd.conf file in the HAVE_PYTHON sections which did
not seem to work.  I ended up moving,

  LoadModule iowa_module        /usr/lib/apache/mod_iowa.so

right after 

  <IfDefine HAVE_PYTHON>
  LoadModule python_module      modules/mod_python.so
  </IfDefine>

and likewise for mod_iowa.c:

  <IfDefine HAVE_PYTHON>
  AddModule mod_python.c
  </IfDefine>
  AddModule mod_iowa.c

Next, after,

  #<Location /server-status>
  #    SetHandler server-status
  #    Order deny,allow
  #    Deny from all
  #    Allow from .your_domain.com
  #</Location>

I added:

  # IOWA (Ruby web interface)
  #
  <Location /iowa>
    SetHandler iowa
    Order allow,deny
    Allow from all
  </Location>

I found that I had to restart the httpd service via,

  sudo /etc/init.d/httpd restart

instead of merely using "apachectl restart".

The install.rb script that comes with version 0.14 did not expand the $(sitelibdir)
variable correctly, I got a new directory structure called

  ./$(sitedir)/$(ruby_version)/

instead of an installation in the proper spot -- I had to use the install.rb
script that came with 0.14a.

Finally, the "Log" link in the first part of the tutorial pointed to

  http://iowa/tutorial/[...]

instead of

  http://localhost/iowa/tutorial/[...]

causing a server error.

I hacked src/Context.rb to hardwire localhost as follows:

  url =~ "(.*?/localhost/iowa/[^/]*)(/.*)?" 

(Note: the examples/subdemo case did not work until I made this hack.)
