Subject: [ruby-talk:28722] stderr from external process?

I have asked this question before - maybe it is just not possible:

I would like to use Ruby as a kind of "make" script.

The first tiny step in this respect is to call an external compiler - and to
trap error messages.
These error messages frequently arrive at stderr.
How do you get to those?

In short I can't figure out how to call an external process and retrive the
pipe for stderr.
The pickaxe book mentions stdin and stdout using popen, not stderr.

Isn't there a way to get stderr. And more generally control other pipes than
just stdin and stdout on child processes?


Longer term: I really hate the build tools around. "Ant" is an attempt to
make something better in Java.
I figure Ruby would be the perfect language for a build tool.
You could also write custom classes for scanning dependencies on custom file
types.
And perhaps use the Workflow module I recently saw on RAA to manage
distributed builds.
