Subject: [ruby-talk:28603] One year anniversary

Well, it's kind of a tradition around here for people to post something on 
their one year anniversary of programming with Ruby.

I found out about it in the Dr. Dobb's article that appeared about a year 
ago now.  As I read through the article, I thought Ruby seemed to be a 
cool language, but I didn't think I'd try it out.  But then I got to the 
part about dRuby and since I was looking for an easy to use distributed 
object system for a project I was doing at work I decided to give it a 
try...  I had been programming in Perl for about six years before that but 
it seems like after only a couple of weeks of programming in Ruby I felt 
more comfortable in Ruby (the pickaxe book helped a lot - Thanks Dave & 
Andy).  I was ready to throw out several thousand lines of Perl code 
and start rebuilding the system at work in Ruby (much to the chagrin of 
management and coworkers ;-).  

At this point, I'm planning to teach a class entitled "Object Oriented 
Programming with Ruby" at a local non-profit agency that offers free 
computer related classes, maybe it'll help spread the word locally...

I hope Ruby continues to find new users in the year ahead - spread the 
word and it should continue to make inroads.
