I agree with you that the author has done a very fine job, and I don't mean
to detract from that in any way. There should be room for multiple players
in the IDE space. My emphasis in RIDE (Ruby IDE) is likely to be different
from RDE.

In particular I want to include seamless support for XP related features
like refactoring, pair programming, and unit testing. Some will like this
and some will not -- its a personal choice.

I tend to work on somewhat large, mixed-technology projects. One of the
advantages of Eclipse is that it is designed as a general framework in which
to host IDE plug-ins to support various development technologies. RIDE will
supply the plug-ins to support Ruby development. But Eclipse already
supports Java, XML, CVS, ANT, and more. By building an IDE on the Eclipse
framework, we get all this as well.

RIDE promises to be a very interesting project. Hal Fulton is helping me
setup a wiki where we can start soliciting ideas, desires, thoughts,
comments, etc. on what RIDE should be able to do and in what order we should
prioritize the implementation of features.

We will make an announcement on this as soon as we can.
