Subject: [ruby-talk:28368] A Ruby Foundation?

I notice that "The Perl Foundation" has recently been started.  It's a 
non-profit organizatoin which accepts donations and makes grants to folks 
in the Perl community so that they can work on the development of Perl 
(modules, Perl6, etc).

It's an idea that seems to have some merit - 
Would it make sense to have something similar in the Ruby community?
Is the Ruby community big enough yet to sustain such an effort? The 
number of Perl folks who would contribute a few bucks to the Perl 
Foundation is potentially in the 50,000 range [I'm just talking 
about 10% of the Perl users out there, 'Programming Perl' has 
sold in the range of 500,000 copies or more by now],  which is enough 
to fund quite a few grants to module developers.

I suspect that the answer is that we don't have enough people yet to 
sustain something like this, but would it be possible to obtain some funds 
from outside (corporate funding)?
