Although I haven't used then recently, I've also done a lot of work with
Smalltalk and other OO and interpreted languages. It is because of my broad
language background that I immediately understood why Ruby was worth jumping
to.

It will probably be more than 6 months. As an independent contractor I would
need to get some significant experience under my belt first. I need to
understand what the current limitations and problem areas are so that I can
make intelligent decisions. Only then would I be prepared enough to make a
case for using Ruby. Of course, on some contracts the client doesn't care,
they just want the end product -- when I get one of those I'd have more
latitude.
