What would be necessary to get mod_ruby running on Apache : 2? Presumably, the Ruby interpreter would need to be made thread-safe, so a thread can say 'create a fresh interpreter' (or get one from a pool) and not have any global conflicts. Ruby is not at that point yet, as I have found writing my ns_ruby project. I am not familiar with Apache2's threading model, but after fitting it into the aolserver threading there hopefully won't be too much work left.
