What about something as simple as

i = 0
"aaaaa".upto("zzzzz") {|s| i += 1; puts "#{i}. #{s}"}

You could write to a file if you wish.  Note that "aaaaa".upto("zzzzz") 
is NOT the same as "a".upto("zzzzz")
