I just did:

svn up
make realclean
./configure && make -j 4

and it built fine on (intel) leopard... I would recommend against  
configure options and let it figure out what is best.

506 % ./ruby -v
ruby 1.8.6 (2007-11-09 patchlevel 5000) [i686-darwin9.0.0]
