Simple advice is "don't use range operators in > conditinals". It would give you warning in 1.7.x. Ooops, do you mean that range operators in conditinals are depreciated? I find these things really usefull, since it manages the corresponding state internally and saves you from doing it yourself. Is there anything else, which replaces that useful construct?
