We've already known this fact, and fixed it on Ruby 1.7.

On my Win2k box,

$ wc hoge.log
 505778 1914838 22578917 hoge.log
$ ruby-1.6 -e "while line = gets; end" hoge.log
 --> 3m20.899s
$ ruby-1.7 -e "while line = gets; end" hoge.log
 --> 0m8.503s
$ perl -e "while (<>) {}" hoge.log
 --> 0m8.993s
